It is very possible to replace the brushes in your electric winches. One sign of worn brushes is if the winch prefers to go one speed rather than the others.
On a separate note, if you press both high and low speed at the same time, you will pop the circuit breaker (and risk damaging the motor) BUT it’s super important to brief the person operating the winch that it’s a safety option if you are being winched up the mast. Electric winches have stuck on, and the results with someone up the mast have been disastrous.
