Rudder weld failed on me… having it welded in Marsh Harbour. Curious if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them? They were not under tremendous pressure and when looking at the tach welds, they looked pretty light on both sides for how important they are. Probably going to get the other side beefed up as well.
I would definitely get the other side done (at least inspected) at the same time. In my experience what happened on one side of a cat is probably ‘happening’ on the other side…
I do agree that those tack weld look light (and poor workmanship). Also unless they have been ground back, I’m not seeing welds at the tapered end - where leverage is at its best.
I would be looking for welds top and bottom on that pin. Looks like they were only welded on the bottom which is very difficult to inspect.
Just to clarify, as it’s hard to tell from your description, the failure occurred on the weld between the arm from the hydraulic ram and the circular part holding the pin. Correct?
I completely agree with Ian’s suggestion that you carefully inspect the other arm, as there’s a good chance that the same person welded this.
