Does anyone know if yanmar 40HP diesels can be altered to have some sort of remote oil level indicator? I ask because as owner of a 2011 480 hull67, our engine compartments are very close to the open ocean. We check our engine oil and sail drive oil somewhat frequently and have had a rouge wave wet the engine with salt water. We saw on sailing Zatara that yanmar does have some sort of rig that allows you to get a oil level without opening the hatch. We have been unable to locate any info. Maybe another 480 0wner has a solution.
I am personally not aware of a Yanmar product for this. I am not very experienced on Yanmar engines. I am however a master mechanic and have a lot of knowledge about engines in general.
One DYS solution would be to drill and tap into the drain plug of the oil pan. With the drain plug removed of course. Then connect a nipple or barbed fitting to the drain plug. Connect a clear vinyl hose to the nipple and then run it to somewhere it is easily seen. Either in or out of your engine compartment. (It would have to be secured vertically) After confirming the oil level is at the proper level with the dip stick, you could mark the oil level on the clear tube with a sharpie marker. Then you would know if your oil was at the proper level with just a glance.
