I bought a Starlink in the USA and brought it to Knysna on our last trip. From what I’ve just read, you need to activate it in the country where you bought it, which I didn’t do. This looks like it might be a problem. Has anyone else brought a Starlink in and activated it in South Africa?

Hi Geoff, I have not done this myself - but from all the SL comments I have seen - I believe you will be able to activate it.
Sometimes people get an extra charge - especially if they bought the SL kit on a special offer that is linked to the country of purchase. From what I’ve seen the extra charge effectively eliminates the discount.
You cannot activate in countries like Turkey that have an active embargo on Starlink but I don’t think that applies to South Africa.
I have certainly transferred my dish between countries which involves re-activating in a different country to the purchase. Most recently re-activated in French Poly (which does not have SL yet) using an address in New Zealand, all went well
Hi Geoff,
We are doing a similar thing. We are in Australia, but will be cruising Fiji this season.
Shortly we will be starting a plan with a Fiji address. We have contacted Starlink and they say that if we get a roam unlimited plan we can use it in Australia prior to our departure. During our crossings we intend to toggle to global priority, then back to roam unlimited.
It appears we will get 2 months like this before we have to be in Fiji.
Well that’s the plan. Talking to people it should work . Starlink doesn’t seem to have a problem activating a plan while you are outside the area.
Well that’s the plan. However from my research, it appears that starlink continually changes the goalposts.
I’ll keep you updated… we depart in a few weeks, so will be starting it all within 2 weeks…
Its a good plan Mike. We are also on Roam Unlimited. We have not had issues with the “2 month rule” but FP is a “coming soon” region that they can’t ask me to transfer to.
Goalposts do move - but not as often as the internet froth would have us believe.
